Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I find out what bus route to take?
MISD has contracted with Durham Bus Company. A representative from Durham will be at Schedule Pick Up and bus assignments will be made at that time. Additionally, the bus routes will be posted in the McKinney Courier Gazette. For other bus information, please contact Durham Bus Company directly at 972-542-8316. You can also use this link to see what bus routes for your student.
When are middle school hours?
School begins at 8:45 a.m. each day and ends at 3:45 p.m. The doors to the school open at 8:15 a.m. Students may not be dropped off before this time as no one is on duty to supervise.
How much do meals cost and can you suggest methods of payment?
Both lunch and breakfast are served at CMS. Students may also purchase lunch items in our snack bar. A "Point of Sale System" is used for making purchases in the cafeteria. Parents are encouraged to pay by check by the week or month. Money is posted to the student's account and daily transactions are deducted. A representative from Aramark Food Service should be on campus during Schedule Pick Up so you may prepay for lunches.
What is the dress code?
Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct for detailed information. CMS administrators and teachers are committed to enforcing MISD's Dress Code Policy. Just some reminders for you as you begin your back to school shopping:
* No spaghetti straps or tank tops.
* No tummies showing.
* No sagging pants or underwear showing.
* No short shorts.
* No tee shirts depicting music groups, violence, drugs, alcohol or tobacco products.
First time violators will be allowed to phone home for a replacement garment. After that, the student will be provided an appropriate garment to wear in exchange for the offending garment.
Can we carry backpacks and gym bags?
Yes, they are allowed in classes unless teacher advises otherwise.
Will students have lockers?
Students will be issued a locker. Locks are permanently installed on the lockers and the students will receive their combinations on the first day of school.
Please check our newsletter, the Cowboy Courier for additional information. Found on our Cockrill Facebook page and our website homepage.

Canvas LMS for Middle Schools
What is Canvas?
Canvas is an easy-to-use, cloud-based learning management system (LMS) that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers and students use into one simple place.
Who uses Canvas?
All three McKinney ISD high schools and five middle schools use Canvas, as well as many colleges and universities such as Collin College, University of Texas, Baylor University, Dartmouth, and more.
Can parents access Canvas?
Yes! Parents can access Canvas by going to https://canvas.mckinneyisd.net and logging in with their HAC (Home Access Center) credentials. Parents will be able to access their student’s account as an “observer” beginning the first day of school. If there are issues with logging in, please contact the campus to get the correct HAC credentials.
What can I access as a parent?
As a parent you will be able to see the calendar with due dates from your student’s classes (if that teacher has entered due dates), announcements, and some course content. You will not, however, be able to participate in the course.
How does my student access Canvas?
Students can access Canvas using their current network username and password. If your student doesn’t know these credentials, please have him/her see the campus library staff. Students can access Canvas on any device that has access to the internet - at home, at school, at the library, etc.
If you have any questions feel free to contact your CMS library staff.

About Dr. Jack Cockrill
|
Dr. Jack Cockrill came to McKinney ISD in 1989, just as the District began an unprecedented period of growth. The McKinney ISD Board of Trustees chose him to lead the district during a period of rapid growth and to create a global vision that would move the district into the 21st century. Dr. Cockrill received a master’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and a Doctorate of Education from East Texas State University.
During the ten years he served as superintendent (1989-1999), Dr. Cockrill led a number of initiatives. Dr. Jack Cockrill served as superintendent of McKinney ISD for an ambitious decade in our district’s history (1989-1999). As his namesake’s school celebrates their 10th anniversary, the passionate educator walked the halls of Cockrill, visited several classrooms and encouraged students to “bump up against excellence”. Here’s a short highlight of his visit to Cockrill Middle School. Dr. Cockrill has been an educator for 55 years, and his passion for leading students to greatness has not diminished one bit! |
More School and MISD Information

One 2 The World
In January 2015, McKinney ISD took a strategic step forward in its mission to prepare all students for college and career success by putting a new MacBook Air laptop in the hands of every MISD freshman.
It’s the first step in the District’s new “One 2 the World” instructional initiative that will roll out from 2014–2018. Once fully implemented, the program will provide every high schooler with personal access to a computer by issuing a laptop to each of those students in much the same way that textbooks have traditionally been distributed—but with vastly greater, and more flexible, educational potential. Bring Your Own Technology

As part of MISD’s 21st Century Learner Initiative, MISD Students, Staff and Parents may now bring their own technology devices to school for instructional purposes. All non-district devices (laptops, iPads, etc.) will have access to MISD’s guest network to access the Internet. All guest users must accept the terms of use prior to accessing the network and MISD is not responsible for theft, damage or loss of any non-district device.
